Darren Shan is transformed into a half-vampire by Mr. Crepsley, but Cirque du Freak holds more unpleasant surprises for the vampire's assistant. Darren joins the vampire Mr. Crepsley as his assistant and they return to Cirque du Freak. There, Darren befriends the snake boy, Evra Von (who knows who Darren is) and a local boy, Sam, and RV, an environmental warrior and animal lover (who does not know). Darren begins to enjoy his life among the circus performers as the youngest half-vampire in existence, but he defiantly refuses to drink human blood - the whole idea makes him nauseous - and desperately tries to cling to the part of him that is human. Darren faces pure evil in the form of Mr. Tiny, the leader of the dwarfs who join Cirque du Freak, who eat anything - including human flesh. When RV discovers animal bones, he frees the werewolf from its cage - and no one can guess how horrific the impact of that will be.
